There is a connection between pain & temperature receptors (in particular, the TrpV1 receptor). There are other temperature receptors also present in the body (such as receptors sensitive to cold temperatures) but the TrpV1 receptor is a good example of how the brain can misinterpret sensory information (thinking that heat is present when its actually a chili pepper).
