Most do not have the time to stay home and prepare healthy meals and because of busy work days fast food is a viable solution when they need a quick meal “now back to lunch!”
As a result of eating out a lot many health issues can develop over time, such as higher cholesterol and heart disease and… well you get it Health Care costs go up!
So what is High Cholesterol and Heart Disease and how can it impact you?
Definition: “Cholesterol is a waxy substance that’s found in the fats (lipids) in your blood. While your body needs cholesterol to continue building healthy cells, having high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease.
When you have high cholesterol, you may develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels and the onset of heart disease. Eventually, these deposits make it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries. Your heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, which increases the risk of a heart attack. Decreased blood flow to your brain can cause a stroke and heart disease.
High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) and heart disease can be inherited, but is often preventable and treatable. A healthy diet, regular exercise and sometimes medication can go a long way toward reducing high cholesterol and preventing heart disease.
Cholesterol: The most common type of steroid in the body, cholesterol and heart disease has gotten something of a bad name. However, cholesterol is a critically important molecule.
It is essential to the formation of:
* Bile acids (which aid in the digestion of fats)
* Vitamin D
* Progesterone
* Estrogens (estradiol, estrone, estriol)
* Androgens (androsterone, testosterone)
* Mineralocorticoid hormones (aldosterone, corticosterone) and
* Glucocorticoid hormones (cortisol).
Cholesterol is also necessary to the normal permeability and function of cell membranes, the membranes that surround cells.
Cholesterol is carried in the bloodstream as lipoproteins. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is the “bad” cholesterol because elevated LDL levels are associated with an increased risk of coronary artery heart disease. Conversely, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is the “good” cholesterol since high HDL levels are associated with less coronary heart disease.
