HemoHIM, is a Korean functional health food supplement developed through biotechnology and radiation technologies from the food-life engineering team of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). It was a government project supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Korea, which spanned for 8 years, costing them 5 billion won (roughly USD $4.7 million). The team had developed this novel herbal composition, initially, for enhancing the immune system of the people working in the project. When its beneficial effect was noted, it was eventually opened and shared to the public.

Immune deficiencies are often associated with decrease immune cells, declining cell activity and oxidative stress. The aging population in particular is often susceptible to declining immune system. To combat this, the research team developed, the original, HemoHIM, prepared by a combination of three (3) edible herbs: Angelica Radix, Cnidium Rhizoma and Paeonia Radix. It was found out that HemoHIM is able to stimulate the development of red blood cells (RBC), activate immune cells, as well as promoting recovery of the immune system against oxidative stresses.

Because HemoHIM has little or no toxic effects, it has an added advantage over other synthetic compounds often prescribed for immune-related ailments. In addition, existing immune drugs have specific targeted functions, whereas HemoHIM is able to simultaneously target multiple immune-related symptoms.

According to researcher Sung-Kee Jo, HemoHIM has been approved not only by the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) but also by US FDA as well, as the first health functional food for immune system improvement. In a series of clinical studies conducted on CANCER patients, healthy volunteers and university students, HemoHIM has shown to improve recovery of white blood cells (WBC) increase interferon production and increase lymphocytes in patients.
