Chronic Sinusitis

Sinuses are hollow cavities around the nasal passages and in the skull. In sinusitis, the sinuses get inflamed and swollen.
This condition interferes with the drainage of the mucus thereby causing the mucus to get collected in the sinuses.

Symptoms to look for:

• Inflamed and swollensinuses
• Swelling around eyes & face
• Throbbing facial pain
• Headaches

Food groups to consume in chronic sinusitis:

1. Liquids: They hydrate mucous membranes and prevent
congestion

Foods to consume: green tea and soups

2. Omega 3 fatty acid: It has natural anti-inflammatory properties

Foods to consume: fish like salmon, tuna & mackerel and also in flax seeds and walnuts

3. Onion and garlic: They are natural expectorants that help
decongest the nasal passages

Foods to consume: Yogurt

4. Vitamin A: Helps to maintain a health mucus membrane

Foods to consume: egg yolk, pumpkin, carrots, leafy greens, tomatoes, mango and papaya

Recipes based on the above food groups:

Recipe 1: Clear onion soup

1. Add 1 tsp oil in a pan
2. Add 1 sliced onion in it
3. Also add 2 chopped garlic cloves
4. Sauté the onions till they become translucent
5. Then, add 2 cups of vegetable stock. You may instead add
chicken stock
6. Boil this mixture for about 5 minutes

To make vegetable stock, you can pressure cook to 2 whistles about 2 peeled onions, 2 carrots, handful of spinach & some celery stalk in 2 L of water. Once boiled, use a strainer to collect the liquid & store. That’s your stock

7. Next, crush one small piece of ginger
8. Add this to the soup
9. Also add 1 clove
10. A small cinnamon stick
11. 1 tbsp soy sauce.
12. Let this mixture simmer on a low flame for about 10 minutes
This will bring out the flavor of all the ingredients
13. Once your soup is ready, serve it hot

Recipe 2: Assorted salad

1. Put 1 small peeled orange in a bowl.
2. Add 8 pieces of papaya.
3. Also add 8-10 grapes.
4. Now, chop and add ½ a peeled cucumber.
5. Also add 2 – 3 chopped walnuts.
6. Next, add ½ cup chopped lettuce.
7. For dressing, add 2 tsp honey, ½ tsp lemon juice and ½ tsp
ginger juice.
8. Now add a pinch of pepper and salt.
9. Mix all these ingredients well and serve

• Avoid alcohol & coffee
• Stay away from fried & junk foods
• Avoid foods with excessive salt & sugar
