Hey Fitlifers!
You may have come across the topic of candida in various health and wellness forums. Candida is a form of fungus, and a very small amount of it lives in our bodies. In very small amounts, Candida is very helpful, as it aids in digestion and nutrient absorption. However, an overgrowth of this fungus / yeast is called Candida albicans. It is a serious health condition as Candida can proliferate throughout your digestive system. This compromises your immune and digestive system (causing liver and bowel dysfunction). An overgrowth of candida can also lead to skin rashes. Candida is caused by an opportunistic microflora which over proliferates in the body when the conditions are right, such as an acidic, damp and sugary environment.
Did you know that a Candida overgrowth can also be at the root of symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, food cravings, allergies, anxiety, depression and skin rashes in men and women of all ages, even babies?
The healthy bacteria in your gut typically keeps your candida levels in check. But several food products can cause the candida population to get out of hand. Are you consuming these?
1. Beer
2. Sugar
3. Kombucha
Always remember that symptoms depend on which part of the body is infected. But here are the most common manifestation of Candida Infection:
Skin and nail fungal infections
Feeling tired and worn down or suffering from chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia
Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, or diarrhea
Autoimmune disease
Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, lack of focus, ADD, ADHD and brain fog
Skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, hives, and rashes
Irritability, mood swings, anxiety, or depression
Vaginal infections , urinary tract infections, rectal itching or vaginal itching
Severe seasonal allergies or itchy ears
Strong sugar and refined carbohydrate cravings
So how can we test for Candida overgrowth? Some of the most noted are thru Blood test, Stool testing and Urine Organix Dysbiosis Test. But our friend Crista Orekio will teach us how to detect if we have a Candida Infection. It’s very simple, affordable and convenient. It is done by:
1. Fill up a glass of water (half way)
2.Spit on it (Dime size)
3. Watch it 2 or 3 times (for over 45 minutes)
Does the spit sink to the bottom or grow legs into the glass of water? If it does, that means that you have candida overgrowth.
There are many ways to be Candida-free but effectively treating candida involves stopping the yeast overgrowth, restoring the friendly bacteria that usually keeps them in check, and healing your gut so that candida growth can be controlled. Getting rid of the candida overgrowth primarily requires a change in diet to a low carbohydrate diet. Sugar is what feeds yeast, so eliminating sugar in all of its simple forms like candy, desserts, alcohol and flours would be ideal.
Also, eliminating all fermented foods and reducing to only one cup a day of the more complex carbohydrates such as grains, beans, fruit, bread, pasta, and potatoes will prevent the Candida from increasing in number. Using diet alone could take some time before the Candida is back under control. But it will free you from the symptoms that you are currently experiencing. Imagine waking up in the morning feeling energized, focused and revitalized!
