An 80 year-old male with a long history of health problems
which included heart disease and recent cognitive
decline was thought to have Alzheimer’s Disease.

The patient was on a statin (cholesterol lowering) drug
among other medications. Screening cholesterol was 104
(125-200 mg/dl) and CoQ10 level was .61 (.44-1.64 mg/l),
both of which are very low, with the cholesterol being very
low.

The patient also had low levels of vitamins B1, E and
D and the mineral zinc. His DHEA, pregnenalone and
testosterone hormone levels were also low. In addition he had
low levels of red blood cells, hemotocrit and hemoglobin.

His TSH was slightly high normal (possibly hypothyroid) and his
A1C (average test of blood sugar over the last 3-4 months) was
elevated.

This patient’s cognitive decline could be due to the significant
lowering of cholesterol with the statin drug and reduced CoQ10 levels; and/or multiple concurrent nutritional insufficiencies involving CoQ10, vitamins B1, D and E; the mineral zinc; and hormones DHEA, pregnenelone and testosterone and possibly thyroid.

If you have someone whose cognition is declining look for multiple
medications (i.e. statins). If you take a statin make sure you take
300-400 mg of CoQ10 with it.
