Ayurvedic philosophy and Chinese medicine both recommend ample amounts of herbs and spices for flavoring and for their medicinal properties.

Dr. Andrew Weill in his food pyramid, which is not the same as the government’s pyramid also recommends using unlimited amounts of a wide variety of spices available today.

You are familiar with the majority of these herbs and spices, while others may be new to you. What you may not know is how Great these herbs are for your health and wellbeing.

I think there are dozens of superfoods herbs/spices and studies they keep finding medicinal properties on some of them all the time.

1-Garlic
Garlic has been used since ancient times. It is strong and potent and has been used by many cultures, for everything from bringing good luck and a long life, to curing the common cold. It is used as both a medicine and a food, garlic is known as an effective treatment for digestive disorders, high blood pressure, and immune strength.

2-Cocoa
This is chocolate in its natural state. It contains a great deal of trace minerals, including zinc, copper and Vitamin C. It is the number one source of Magnesium, incredibly high Iron content, helps balance blood sugar and oxygenates the blood. I did a special vlog posts just on the benefits of dark chocolate so check it out for more details. Choose chocolate that is dairy free.

3- turmeric
Turmeric is my favorite spice ever. It is known to ease pain and inflammation. In Ayurveda (the traditional medicine of India), this herb has been used for thousands of years to treat arthritis and other ailments. Some research suggests that turmeric may help relieve some symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis; Curcumin, tumeric’s primary active ingredient — is one of the most powerful anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories on the planet.

4- onions
Onions are part of the herb trinity in Ayurveda, which include garlic and ginger. It helps balance your hormones, and can increase stamina and alertness. Onions area considered a respiratory system tonic, helping with the symptoms of asthma and allergies. It helps you expectorate and relieve cough.

5- ginger
This is a wonder root, used as a spice and flavor enhancer but with countless health benefits. It is a powerful digestive tonic with anti-inflammatory properties. According to Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicine, it helps strengthen the nervous system, restores sexual energy, strengthens the immune system, helps with lung issues, relieves menstrual cramps.

6- cinnamon
In ancient times cinnamon was valued as a currency, more precious than gold. There are studies currently investigating its role in lowering blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, most likely due to the insulin-like effects of its polyphenols (natural substances found in plants. Cinnamon is warming to the body and it is very easy to incorporate into your diet, adding it to coffee, oatmeal, smoothies and desserts.

7-cayenne pepper
Did you know that Capsaicin, the oily compound behind most of the health benefits of cayenne and it’s also the active ingredient in many prescription and over-the-counter creams, ointments, and patches for arthritis and muscle pain. It stops pain by depleting nerve cells of the chemical that transfer pain signals to the brain.

8- fennel seeds
Fennels seeds, soaked in hot water and drank as tea relieve gas and bloating like nothing else I’ve ever tried. It’s been a life-saver more than once for me. The ancient Egyptians used fennel to boost women’s libido, and it is known to contain chemicals that may increase sex drive.

9- maca (this is a new one)
Maca has been a staple in the Peruvian Andes for thousands of years, It increases energy, endurance, strength, and libido. It balances your hormones, heals depression, increases libido, supports the Endocrine system, and provides thyroid support. In men, Maca has proven to heal many issues involving the prostate.
